LOCAL FOOD EVENTS & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ARE ABUNDANT THIS BEAUTIFUL SPRING!

SAT, MAR 19 – RAISED BED WORKDAY IN HARRISBURG – Join volunteers from ALG and Reid Memorial Presbyterian to install 12 more raised beds for vegetable gardening at individual homes in the Harrisburg community, and get some city farm work done at Icebox Urban Farm. Work starts at 9am and goes until lunch at 1pm. Bring your shovel, gloves and a water bottle. Meet up at Icebox Ministries Urban Farm at 1734 Fenwick Street, Augusta. This is a rain or shine event! SAT, MAR 19 – McBEAN SENIOR COMMUNITY GARDEN DAY – Volunteer with David Young and others of the Hobby Farmers of the CSRA this weekend for a fun-filled morning building a raised bed garden for the seniors of the McBean Community. Lunch will be provided! This is a Food-Oasis-Augusta inspired event! Address is 1155 Hephzibah-McBean Road, Hephzibah, GA 30815. SAT, SUN, MAR 19 & 20 – WHITE HILLS FARM HOSTS “A WEEKEND OF DRAWING AND PAINTING EN PLEIN AIR” – What a unique way to enjoy spring’s plentiful gifts. This all-inclusive in Dearing, GA, provides a box lunch, afternoon tea and an artist presentation on Sat. To preregister, contact Lisa at whitehillsfarm@gmail.com.

TUE, MAR 22 – BABY FARM ANIMALS WITH KHAKALAKI FARM AT THE DOWNTOWN MARKET PICK-UP – Farmer Kathryn Koven of Khakalaki Farm will bring a baby goat or lamb to the downtown market pick-up this week! Bring the kids! (No pun intended:) Learn about what she does on this permaculture farm in Trenton, SC, and sign up for her free Sheep Shearing event in April! (See below.)

TUE, MAR 22 – ICEBOX MINISTRIES LAUNCHESTHE CULTURE CLUB” – Join this monthly gathering of fermentation enthusiasts! This first class – in March – is hands-on making Kombucha! Classes go through December. Visit icebox ministries.org for more information and to register!

WED, MAR 23 – WEDNESDAY WORKSHOPS AT RED CLAY MARKET: “NATURAL EGG DYING AND DECORATING” – Urban chicken farmer Toni O’Quinn will lead us through the fun use of natural ingredients to dye and decorate local eggs, just in time for Easter. WED, MAR 23 – BRANDON WILDE HEALTH EXPOALG will host an educational booth at this lovely senior living community in Evans. Big thanks to fabulous fiber farmer Pam Avrett of Hard Earth Farm/Southern Made for pulling that together and to rockstar dietitian Tracey Neely for inviting us.

WED, MAR 30 – WEDNESDAY WORKSHOPS AT RED CLAY MARKET: “GROWING CITRUS” – Urban farmer and teacher Steve Gianino will share his secrets for growing citrus, right here in Columbia County. Free, sponsored by Augusta Locally Grown, 5pm-6:3pm. Address is 4460 Washington Road, Evans.

SAT, APR 2 – SHEEP SHEARING DAY AT KHAKALAKI FARM – This free event is the perfect weekend get-away with or without the kids! Come watch this traveling shearer work his gentle magic, and then enjoy a farm tour and farm-fresh snacks on this bucolic permaculture setting. April 2, 11am-2pm. SAT, APR 30 – BENDERDINKER! Once again, Augusta Locally Grown has been selected as the beneficiary of this amazing, one-of-a-kind, food-music-paddle! This is year five!!! SAT, MAY 7 – “FOOD AS ART” GALA AT THE DAVIDSON FINE ARTS SCHOOL REUNION. – ALG is thrilled to small play a part in helping with this very special locally-grown-themed event! Hugs to ALG board member Kisha Burke for her leadership on this!

TUE, JUNE 7 – FVRx KICK OFF COMMUNITY MEAL!!! -ALG is so lucky to be working again with amazing community partners for a second-year pilot of our Fruit & Vegetable Prescription program, otherwise known as “FVRx-Augusta.” This is one of our dozen G.R.O.W. Harrisburg initiatives! The program is hosted by Harrisburg Family Healthcare and enrolls 30 women from the neighborhood to participate. It is funded by Wholesome Wave Georgia and Good Neighbor Ministries; studied by Emory’s School of Public Health; Icebox Ministries provides cooking classes; MCG students provide market management and clinic support; Veggie Truck Market farmers provide nutrition education and sell their wonderful fruits and veggies through this program; Helms College students, the Augusta District Dietetic Association volunteers and the American Culinary Federation of Augusta help with cooking demos; St. Luke UMC provides transportation; the Junior League provides kids activities; Georgia Organics supports our outreach! Wow! Team awesome!!!
