SAT, SEPT 26 – URBAN GARDEN WORK DAY – Is food justice a passion for you? Are you interested in urban gardening & farming as activism? Then come, join us for a day of hard work and wonderful company at the Icebox Ministries campus in Harrisburg. We’ll install 20 raised beds from 9am-4pm. Our goal: to create a beautiful, whimsical, educational, year-round veggie garden where school children and others will experience the deep awe of growing healthy, whole food. Lunch will be served to all our volunteers. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen and closed toe shoes, as well as broken-down cardboard boxes if you have them! SAT, SEPT 26 – RED CLAY: A CHEF’S MARKETOPENING IN EVANS – Residents of Columbia County are about to get a wonderful surprise in their neighborhood. Chef Erica Chaney (a long-time champion of local foods) is opening the Red Clay market in Evans. Chef Erica describes it as “working together with local farmers and culinary artists to offer fresh wholesome ingredients year-round, handcrafted kitchen products, classes, events & more…” A soft opening is scheduled for this weekend. Address is 4460 Washington Road, Suite 19, Evans. ALG is super psyched to help this effort take local foods to a whole new level in the CSRA!

SEPT 26–SEPT 30 – LOVE FEST AT WHOLE FOODS MARKET AUGUSTA – Whole Foods is sharing the love by way of 25-cent coffee this month … and all those quarters are coming to Augusta Locally Grown! The whole gift from whole foods will go toward our G.R.O.W. Harrisburg projects. So caffeine up and support “what’s growing on” in Augusta.

MON, SEPT 28 – BENDERDIGGER YOUTH FALL GARDENING PROGRAMALG is honored to play a part in the “Benderdigger” Youth Gardening Program in Evans, now in its third year. We help bring in experts to teach the kids an organic gardening curriculum from soil-to-plate. This program will run on Monday evenings this fall. Visit www.benderdigger.com for more information. MON, SEPT 28 – VEGGIE-CENTRIC COOKING CLASS FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS – Chef Megan Alig of Culinary Connections challenges second-year medical students to cook with the same seasonal, local, farmers market produce that they prescribe to their patients through our Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program. WED, SEPT 30 – NEEDLE FELTING WORKSHOP FEATURING LOCAL WOOL – Join the gifted fiber farmers of Southern Made, a gorgeous store and learning center at 1850 Broad Street in Augusta. This Wednesday, they will offer a Needle Felting class using locally grown fiber from Bella Luna Sheep & Wood of Washington, GA. The class is 2pm-3pm, and costs $27, which includes a needle felting kit that you keep. Ages 10 and up are welcome. Contact Suzanne at 706-401-8446 to enroll. FRI, OCT 2 – POLLINATION EDUCATION FOR PRESCHOOL STUDENTS – We’re honored to return to the “Bee Hive Pre School” in Evans for a second round of pollination education. Big thanks to the GRU Dietetic Internship program for helping with this and other events this month!

SUN, OCT 4 — FARM-TO-PARK DINNER TO BENEFIT PENDLETON KING PARK & FEATURING CHEF CHARLEEN — Save the date for what will surely be the biggest farm to table event that Augusta’s ever seen! Chef Charleen of Culinary Connections will feature local foods at this Pendleton King Park fundraiser… and ALG will serve it up! Volunteers: contact Kim Hines. Farmers: contact Chef Charleen!! THU, OCT 15 – HERBAL BLENDING WORKSHOP AT WHITE HILLS FARM – Seriously folks, if you haven’t been to one of these workshops yet, you are missing out. Lisa Kessler at White Hills Farm in Dearing, GA, is a gifted herbalist and lavender farmer who will rock your world with the joy of natural scents and flavors. This workshop is called “Chefs’ Secrets: Herbal Blending.” It will center on fabulous cooking achieved simply, with calculated herbal additions. October is the perfect time to harvest, dry and “crack” herbs for cooking, and with Lisa’s guidance, you’ll make several take-home blends for the season. Session runs 10am-2:30pm and includes tea, demonstration with lunch, great dessert and fellowship. Cost is $28/person. SAT, OCT 17 – 200 IN HARRISBURG – Super excited to start installing 100 more raised beds at individuals’ homes throughout the neighborhood of Harrisburg. Assuming our funding comes in, we’ll start installing Oct 17! Please save the date: more details coming soon.

SUN, OCT 18 – FALL FARM FEST AT CLYDE’S FRESH PRODUCE – Tour this local, Certified Naturally Grown farm in Grovetown. Get to know your farmers! Bring the kids. Buy fresh from the farm. 2pm-6pm.

SUN, OCT 25 – WINE CAP MUSHROOM CULTIVATION WORKSHOP – Join local mushroom farmer Matthew Kelly at Honey Creek Mushrooms in Martinez. This is a rare, 3-hour, hands-on opportunity to learn from a local guru. Tastings and nutritional information about other varieties, including oyster mushrooms, lions mane, and shitake will also be shared. Workshop is $25/person. 1pm-4pm. Take-home spawn to grow-your-own can also be purchased for an additional cost. Space is limited. Order tickets by email: kim@augustalocallygrown.org.

TUE, OCT 27 – CLOSING DAY OF THE VEGGIE TRUCK FARMERS MARKET – Join the GROW Harrisburg team along with the Augusta Junior League and Wholesome Wave Georgia as we put on a Halloween theme community meal and healthy kids festival. 4pm-7pm. 1850 Broad Street, Augusta. Across from the Kroc Center.

SAT, OCT 31 – HAUNTED HARRISBURG: MEET THE NEIGHBORHOOD’S FRIENDLY GHOSTSALG will join efforts with GRU students and Harrisburg residents to host a botanical clean up and children’s carnival, including healthy snacks, at the Rollersville Cemetery in Harrisburg. Volunteers definitely needed! Times: 9am-3pm.

MON, NOV 2 – MEET & GREET FOR THE TEDX AUGUSTA SPEAKERS – What better way to embrace our community’s movers and shakers than by feeding them local foods and introducing them to the people who grow it. Volunteer farmers and cooks: we need you for this one!

THU, NOV 5 – AUGUSTA FOOD OASIS – It’s time to get this thing rolling! We’ll host our second meeting of Local Food Activists on Thursday, November 5, 6pm-8pm. The gathering will be held at “The Clubhou.se” on Telfair Street & 5th, in Augusta. If you want to help create a more vibrant local foods culture in the CSRA, then please know: you are invited!!!! SAT, NOV 7 – MAKE SPA-GRADE PRODUCTS: A WORKSHOP AT WHITE HILLS FARM – Once again, Lisa Kessler will share her herbal secrets, much to the delight of the rest of us! This workshop runs 10am-2:30pm, with crafting of three bath and beauty preparations. You will learn to make balms, scrubs and body butters using organic herbs and oils and will receive the latest information on best preparation practices. Fun and relaxing!
