We grow lettuce and other vegetables using a technique called Aquaponics inside a 3500 sqft solar designed greenhouse. Aquaponics is the combination of hydroponics ( growing things in water instead of soil) and aquaculture ( raising fish in a large tank). Because we use fish as a natural fertilizer “engine” instead of adding chemicals and nutrients to the water, it is truly 100% natural. We can’t even use organically approved products in the system because they will kill the fish and destroy the system. Our greenhouse was built using only organically approved materials. We utilize the entire space to be as energy and water efficient as possible. We use less than 2% of the water (1,200 gallons per month) and 3% of the energy required to grow our produce conventionally. We have capacity for almost 13,000 plants growing at once as well as another 8,000 seedlings on a 1/12 acre footprint. We use tilapia in our system that will be sold locally. We are currently growing about 12 types of lettuce including assorted green and red leaf varieties as well as green butter head, red and green swirled butter head, romaine, Batavian summer crisp and spring mixes. We are also growing cucumbers, and should have tomatoes in 10 varieties later in the year.
