THE ON-LINE MARKET IS OPEN AT AUGUSTA LOCALLY GROWN!

IT ALWAYS MAKES ME GIGGLE when people suggest that winter is a “slow time” for farmers, farmers markets and for Augusta Locally Grown activities. True, there’s less growing in the fields. But boy, there a TRUE WHIRLWIND of detailed planning, preparing and evaluating going on behind the scenes. Please consider volunteering this winter as we gear up for spring and summer and fall. There is no better way “to reap what we sow” than to be involved from the ground up. Many volunteer opportunities are listed below.

SAT, SUN, MON, JAN 16-18 – “MLK WEEKEND OF SERVICE” AT ICEBOX MINISTRIES’ CHILDREN’S TEACHING GARDEN – Come help build this teaching garden campus, designed for school children at Icebox Ministries in Harrisburg. Volunteer work goes from 9am-1pm each … lunch shared together afterwards. Get your church and other groups involved! RSVP to kim@augustalocallygrown.org.

MON, JAN 18 – MLK DAY OF SERVICE AT THE HARRISBURG VETERANS GARDEN – Just around the corner from the children’s garden at Icebox Ministries, there’s also a community garden going up for local military veterans. It will be the first ADA certified garden in Augusta, made specifically for disabled vets. This project is spearheaded by Angel Veggies and the Harrisburg Community Garden … and it’s all part of our collective “G.R.O.W. Harrisburg” Initiative to make this inner-city neighbor a healthy foods destination!

THU, JAN 21 – TEDX AUGUSTA SPEAKER DINNERALG is honored to work again with Chef Megan Alig of Creative Cuisine to provide a very local pre-event dinner for speakers next week. Farmers … if you’d like to donate some veggies or other ingredients to this event of movers and shakers, please let me know this weekend!

FRI, JAN 29 – TEDX AUGUSTA – We’re very excited to again play a part in helping with the TedxAugusta event in 2016. What a great way to promote local foods among our community’s deep thinkers. Specifically, we’re creating a “Pop Up Food Truck Event” right in the middle of Broad Street! We’re also working with Helms College culinary students to host a very local, very tasty morning break. Excited to announce that all our volunteer slots are filled. Big love to Leadership Augusta and our own board of directors for making that happen!
